Chipmaker’s top exec believes 5G could be big news faster than first thought.

Every flagship Android phone will come with 5G by the end of 2019, with the next–generation tech taking off much quicker than currently anticipated.

That’s the word from President of chip-maker Qualcomm, Cristiano Amon.

Speaking during his company’s Snapdragon Technology Summit, being held in Hawaii, Amon said: "When we get to exactly this time of year one year from now, we will see every [manufacturer] on the Android ecosystem, their flagship across all US carriers will be a 5G device.

"Every Android vendor is working on 5G right now."

Samsung said this week that it would release a 5G device in conjunction with US network Verizon in the first half of 2019.

It’s thought that a Galaxy S10 with 5G support is in the works and could be launched globally.Meanwhile, Huawei’s foldable phone is set to be 5G only, while OnePlus has already confirmed it is working on a 5G phone.

The news comes just days after it was reported that Apple will hold off releasing a 5G iPhone until 2020, believing that the infrastructure will not be strong enough by the end of next year.

Three, Vodafone, O2 and EE are all trialling 5G, with an eye to launching their own services in major UK cities in 2019.
